 | Satisfyingly difficult to categorise, 35yd beat experiment offer a powerful antidote to the seemingly endless round of covers bands and post-punk guitar groups that dominate the live music scene. Combining driving rhythms with elements of soul, Latin and jazz, this local six-piece fuse drums, vocals, bass, piano, congas, decks, saxophone and didgeridoo into a set packed with luxuriant emotional grooves. Literally filling the stage with equipment and personnel there is always the danger of creating a cacophony of noise, but in this case there are no guitars to fill the open spaces. The result is uniquely spacious music that flows together organically, grasping the soul with its emotional intensity whilst leaving you no choice but to shake your hips to the underlying funkiness of it all. As their website notes, this is music for ‘both brain and booty’. The originality of their sound is perhaps born of the eclectic smorgasbord from which the various band members originate. Having previously been in bands playing everything from reggae and jazz through to drum & bass, hip hop and even folk music, these boys have come together to create something golden. Atmospheric, soulful, funky, intense; in truth any number of adjectives could be applied but none alone would do justice to the quality of the finished product. |
